Seokwoo NAM explores the relationship between images and narratives, drawing motifs from personal experiences, myths, novels, and poetry interwoven within memory. He places different times and places, figures and scenes within a single frame, examining the interactions that emerge through their connections. In particular, the artist constructs each scene as a dramatic moment by positioning figures to perform certain actions or poses, like actors on a stage, thereby inviting the viewer’s imagination. In his recent work, NAM adopts “preservation” and “storage” as key concepts, using earthenware jars as a central motif and narrowing the scope of his practice to the relationship between image and narrative itself, with a focus on the organic dynamics of storytelling. While each scene appears complete and independent, it is never fixed as a single, coherent story. Moreover, the recurring figures engaged in brushing or weaving the canvas in works such as Between Pushed-in Horns and Pierced Holes (2024) and Frame (2024) suggest that the artist’s everyday thoughts and emotions are projected onto the surface.

남석우는 이미지와 이야기 사이의 관계를 다룬다. 그는 기억에 혼재된 개인적 경험, 신화, 소설, 시 등에서 모티브를 얻는다. 서로 다른 시간과 장소 그리고 인물이나 장면들을 한 화면 안에 배치하고, 이들이 서로 연결돼 만들어내는 상호작용을 살핀다. 특히 작가는 그림 속 인물들이 그 안에서 무대 위의 배우처럼 어떤 행위나 자세를 취하도록 함으로써 각각의 극적인 장면을 구성하고, 상상력을 자극한다. 최근 작업에서 작가는 ‘보존’과 ‘저장’을 키워드로 ‘항아리’를 주된 작업의 대상으로 삼고 ‘이미지와 이야기의 관계’ 자체로 작업의 범위를 좁혀 서사의 유기적 측면에 집중하고자 한다. 각 장면들은 그 자체로 완결되고 독립적인 것처럼 보이지만, 결코 하나의 이야기로 확정되지 않는다. 또 <밀어 넣어진 뿔과 뚫린 구멍 사이로>(2024), <틀>(2024) 등의 작업에서 빈번하게 등장하는 붓질을 하거나, 캔버스를 짜고 있는 인물의 모습은 작가의 일상적 생각이나 감정이 화면에 투영되고 있음을 유추하게 한다.

남석우(b.1997)은 조선대학교 미술대학 회화학과 서양화과를 졸업했다. 개인전으로는 유스퀘어-문화관 금호갤러리 (2023, 광주)에서 가졌고 광주시립미술관 하정웅 분관 (2024, 광주), 아크갤러리 (2023, 광주), 산수싸리 (2023, 광주) 등에서 그룹전을 가졌다.
