What I Want to See

What I Want to See is a group exhibition that features the works of three artists, Ahram Kwon, Anna Han, and Wonhae Hwang. The exhibition will highlight the contrasts between the artists’ existing major oeuvres and their new works. The title of the exhibition, “What I Want to See,” borrows partially from the title of American artist Philip Guston’s book, I Paint What I Want to See. The book is a compilation of conversations Gustong himself had with fellow artists since 1960 and is structured to give a glimpse into the evolution of his artistic concerns and choices (of methodology) of nearly 20 years (spanning broadly from the late teens to the 40s), in addition to his detailed practices. Taking inspiration from this approach, the exhibition examines why the three artists chose their specific subjects and through what perspectives they are engaging with their objects of inquiry.
Ahram Kwon reimagines ‘(the methodology of) what is being seen’ through the media. The artist pays attention to the fact that the digital network, which casts a tightly knit net, affects the inner psyche of each individual, establishing itself as a major axis of so-called “subjectivity.” For Kwon, the world transmitted as a two-dimensional image can only be one in which details are omitted, disparate, and distorted from its true reality; it is one that has transformed into an “illusion” that has no resemblance to the original subject. Reflecting this view, Kwon, in her work Flat Matter, compresses visual information into symbolic images. The mirror juxtaposed with the images on the monitor continuously attempts to affirm its existence through an interaction that creates depth beyond the flat surface, only to fail repeatedly.
Anna Han explores the materialization of spatiality in various ways through the media of painting and installation. Maintaining the shallow and flat colored canvas, Han expands her work into sitespecific space design using not only lighting and fabric but also varied canvas support structures by staggering them, stacking them like a tower, or placing them laid down. Amidst these variations, her works would never escape the category of painting even if they presented themselves in a more explicit form of spatial installation. Continuing this approach, Han’s new work, Red Galaxy, incorporates neon to the sides of the canvas and brings light to the three-dimensions of the color spectrum. In essence, the space she seeks to create with her pictorial language is close to an intimate space where personal narratives and subsequent imagery are projected in their multiple layers.
Wonhae Hwang rediscovers the exterior elements of the buildings that constitute urban landscapes and expressively breathes life into the spatiality (i.e. narratives and history) embedded in them. By repeatedly adding, spilling, and wiping paint on the canvas, she builds multiple layers to capture its ever-changing internal and external dynamism. In particular, Hwang’s recent works follow the changes in the center of her focus that gradually shifts from a superficial representation of the physical phenomena to an exploration of the formative expression that utilizes her unique pictorial gestures.

《내가 보고 싶은 것, What I Want to See》 는 권아람, 애나한, 황원해 작가 3인이 참여하는 기획전이다. 전시는 세 작가의 기존 주요 작업들과 신작이 대비되도록 구성된다. 타이틀로 내건 ‘내가 보고싶은 것’은 미국 회화작가 필립 거스통(Philip Guston)의 책 제목 『I Paint What I Want to See』 에서 부분적으로 가져왔다. 책은 1960년부터 필립 거스통 자신이 직접 참여했던 작가와의 대화들을 하나로 엮은 것이다. 근 20여년(넓게는 10대 후반부터 40여년)의 작업 여정에 걸친 고민과 선택들(방법론), 또 그 세부적 실천을 엿볼 수 있게끔 구성돼 있다. 이번 전시는 그런 책의 의도를 적극 가져와, 세 작가의 관점에서 특정의 대상을 왜 정했고, 어떤 관점에서 바라보고 있는지 살핀다.
권아람은 미디어의 스크린을 거쳐 우리에게 ‘보여지는 것(방식)‘을 재사유한다. 작가는 촘촘한 그물망으로 깔린 디지털 네트워크가 개개인의 내면 깊은 곳까지 영향을 미쳐, 이른바 ‘주체성’을 이루는 큰 축으로 자리매김하고 있음에 주목한다. 그의 입장에서 평평한 이미지로 전송되는 세계는 기본적으로 세부가 생략된 것일 수밖에 없고, 그 실체에서 분리, 왜곡될 뿐 아니라 원주체가 지워진 ‘허상’에 가깝게 탈바꿈된다. 이미지 정보들을 상징적 이미지로 압축해 담아낸 <납작한 세계 Flat Matters>는 그런 작가의 관점을 잘 반영하고 있다. 스크린에 담긴 이미지와 병치된 거울은 평면 너머의 깊이를 생성하는 상호작용으로 자기 존재 확인을 지속해 시도하지만 미끄러지길 반복할 뿐이다.
애나한은 회화, 설치를 바탕 삼아 공간성의 구현을 다각적으로 모색해왔다. 그는 색의 얕고, 평평한 화면을 유지하면서 엇갈리도록 하거나, 또 탑처럼 쌓고, 눕히는 등 지지체를 다양하게 구성할 뿐 아니라 조명, 천 등을 이용해 장소 특정적 공간연출로 확장한다. 다만 작가의 입장에서, 작품이 공간설치 형식을 본격화해 제시했더라도 이는 결코 회화의 범주를 벗어나지 않는다. 신작 <Red Galaxy>는 네온을 캔버스 옆면에 덧붙이고 색의 스펙트럼을 입체적으로 강조하고 있는 작품이다. 또 작가가 회화적 어법으로 그려내고자 하는 공간은 개인적 서사와 그에 따른 심상이 다층적으로 투영된 내밀화된 장소에 가깝다.
황원해는 도시풍경을 이루는 건축물들의 표면적 요소를 재감각해 거기 내재된 일련의 장소성(이야기와 역사가 스민)을 표현적으로 그려낸다. 캔버스 위에 물감을 덧칠하고, 흘리고, 닦아내기를 거듭하면서 다층의 레이어를 구축해 하나로 고정되지 않고 끊임없이 변화하는 안과 밖의 역동성을 화면에 담아낸다. 특히, 최근 작업들에서 보듯 작가는 물리적 현상의 표피적 재현이 아니라, 고유의 회화적 제스처에 의한 조형성을 모색하는 것으로 점차 작업의 무게 중심을 옮겨가고 있음이 더 분명하게 감지된다.

Kwon Ahram (b.1987) is a Seoul-based artist who holds a B.F.A from Konkuk University, a M.F.A from Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, and a Ph.D in Design Major from Seoul National University. She has held solo exhibitions at The Great Collection (2021, Seoul), One and J.+1 (2018, Seoul), and more. She has participated in group exhibitions at Songeun (2022, Seoul), Seoul Museum of Art (2022, Seoul), Sungkok Art Museum (2021, Seoul), and international venues in Hong Kong, London, and Germany. In 2022, Kwon received the Grand Prize at the 21st edition of the Songeun Art Award Exhibition.
ANNA HAN (b. 1982) currently lives and works in Seoul. She graduated from Pratt Institute and Cranbrook Academy of Art in the USA, as well as Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture. Her solo exhibitions include Chapter II (2021, Seoul), Gallery Baton (2017, Seoul), and OCI Museum (2014, Seoul). She has participated in group exhibitions at Suwon Museum of Art (2023, Suwon), SONGEUN (2022, Seoul), ILwoo Space (2022, Seoul), Wooyang Museum of Contemporary Art (2021, Gyeongju), and many others.
Hwang Wonhae (b.1989) lives and works in Seoul. She holds both a B.F.A and M.F.A from Hong-ik University in Seoul, Korea. She has held solo exhibitions at Seoul Olympic Museum of Art (2021, Seoul), OCI Museum of Art (2021, Seoul), Artspaceboan 1942 (2018, Seoul) and so forth. Her works have also been featured in group exhibitions at the Seoul Olympic Museum of Art, P21, and Openspacebae, among others.
