Starting from the series titled Lady-x which was presented for the first time in 2015, Jang Pa has been seeking to reidentify her own identity as a female. Through the series that followed, including X-Grulesque and Brutal Skins, Jang Pa examined and dismantled the conventional notion and (socio-cultural) implication of ‘femininity’ and brought the question to a more fundamental dimension. Lady-x exhibits in an extreme manner the sexual impulse of a women who is attracted to trees, a condition also called dendrophilia. Bold strokes and red hue give explicitness and grotesque to the body. First, this traces back and clears the long passage of defining and objectifying women which was imposed by the biased system and custom. Then it brings us to face the essence (ego) as it is, something that had been eliminated thereby.

장파 작업 전반에 걸쳐 ‘여성의 주체성’은 중요한 키워드다. 그는 남성 중심의 위계적 구조에서 부정적으로 여겨진 ‘여성적 특성’들을 전면에 내세우고, 긍정성을 부여한다. 또 ‘여성적인 것’의 탐구에서 시작하지만, 거기에만 머물지 않고 여성의 관점을 보편화하고 ‘여성’이라는 범주 자체를 교란하는 감각체계와 그에 걸 맞는 회화의 표면, 질감을 고민한다. 아울러 고전 조각상을 모티브로 삼은 여성/형상 시리즈(2017) 이후 미술사 혹은 문화사적 도상을 적극 가져와 그런 작가적 관심을 더 구체화하고 있다.
