Kwon Ahram reimagines ‘(the methodology of) what is being seen’ through the media. The artist pays attention to the fact that the digital network, which casts a tightly knit net, affects the inner psyche of each individual, establishing itself as a major axis of so-called “subjectivity.” For Kwon, the world transmitted as a two-dimensional image can only be one in which details are omitted, disparate, and distorted from its true reality; it is one that has transformed into an “illusion” that has no resemblance to the original subject. Reflecting this view, Kwon, in her work Flat Matter, compresses visual information into symbolic images. The mirror juxtaposed with the images on the monitor continuously attempts to affirm its existence through an interaction that creates depth beyond the flat surface, only to fail repeatedly. 

Kwon Ahram (b.1987) is a Seoul-based artist who holds a B.F.A from Konkuk University, an M.F.A from Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, and a Ph.D in Design Major from Seoul National University. Ahram has held solo exhibitions at The Great Collection (2021, Seoul), One and J.+1 (2018, Seoul), and more. She participation in group exhibitions at SONGEUN (2022, Seoul), Seoul Museum of Art (2022, Seoul), Sungkok Art Museum (2021, Seoul), and international venues in Hong Kong, London, and Germany. In 2022, Ahram received the Grand Prize at the 21st edition of the SONGEUN Art Award Exhibition.

권아람은 미디어의 스크린을 거쳐 우리에게 ‘보여지는 것(방식)‘을 재사유한다. 작가는 촘촘한 그물망으로 깔린 디지털 네트워크가 개개인의 내면 깊은 곳까지 영향을 미쳐, 이른바 ‘주체성’을 이루는 큰 축으로 자리매김하고 있음에 주목한다. 그의 입장에서 평평한 이미지로 전송되는 세계는 기본적으로 세부가 생략된 것일 수밖에 없고, 그 실체에서 분리, 왜곡될 뿐 아니라 원주체가 지워진 ‘허상’에 가깝게 탈바꿈된다. 이미지 정보들을 상징적 이미지로 압축해 담아낸 <납작한 세계 Flat Matters>는 그런 작가의 관점을 잘 반영하고 있다. 스크린에 담긴 이미지와 병치된 거울은 평면 너머의 깊이를 생성하는 상호작용으로 자기 존재 확인을 지속해 시도하지만 미끄러지길 반복할 뿐이다

권아람(b. 1987)은 건국대 디자인조형대학 광고영상디자인전공 학사 졸업 후, UCL런던대학교 슬레이드 미술대학 파인아트-미디어 석사 졸업, 서울대학교 미술대학 디자인전공 박사를 졸업했다. 주요 개인전으로 더 그레잇 컬렉션 (2021, 서울), 원앤제이 플러스원 (2018, 서울) 등 에서 개최 했으며, 송은 (2022, 서울), 서울시립미술관 (2022, 서울), 성곡미술관 (2021, Seoul) 외 홍콩, 런던, 독일, 네덜란드 등 다수의 그룹전에 참여했다. 2022년에는 제21회 송은미술대상전(2021) 대상을 수상했다.
